Super Street Fighter II Turbo features the introduction of the extremely powerful boss character Akuma, a seemingly immortal devil martial artist. The game also includes four selectable speed settings, and new moves and animations for all the existing characters.
Super Turbo also introduced "Super Combo" techniques to the Street Fighter series. A super combo is a type of special move, usually a more powerful version of a character's special move, that can be performed only under a certain condition and will strike an opponent multiple times. Super Turbo also introduced the ability to perform a combo against an opponent who is in mid-air.
The speed of the game can be adjusted by the operator in the system configuration menu. If the speed setting is set to 'Free Select', the player is able to select the speed at the start of the game.
