Regal Sets Rules on Game Sex, Violence in Theaters
Regal Entertainment Group, the largest movie theater operator in the United States, this month said it would ban from its lobbies arcade games containing violence and obscenity. Regal said by the end of this year, it will not place arcade games in its theater lobbies if they show bloody violence against people or any violence against police.
Games with graphic sex or nudity, foul language and those appearing to condone crime would also be banned from Regal's 562 theaters, the Knoxville, Tennessee company said. "Placement of certain video games is not conducive to the overall environment we strive to achieve," Mike Campbell, chief executive of Regal's theater operations, said in a statement.
Regal's major investor, Colorado billionaire Philip Anschutz, also backs a number of family-friendly media companies that produce content shies away from sex and violence. Some local governments in the United States have attempted to restrict sales of violent games in recent years. Some academics and parents' groups have also condemned content that they say desensitizes kids to the consequences of violence.
