This week Australia's Minister for Family and Community Services, Senator Kay Patterson, said vital research to help problem gamblers would be undertaken following the signing of an historic agreement between the Australian Government, States and Territories.
The signing by all Members of the Ministerial Council on Gambling marked the start of the independent National Gambling Research Program that will provide vital information in areas where there was little research to date, she said.
According to a report in the Sunday Herald Sun, in Australia, linked jackpots will be banned, poker machines will no longer accept notes, and players' losses will be strictly limited as part of this tough national gambling strategy.
The Herald Sun also reported other policies to stop gambling addicts could include a national cap on poker machines, bans on in-house ATMs and a uniform poker machine design that limits attractive or flashy effects and restricts the speed at which players can bet.
