First Schnapsen Championship - 38.3% Rise in Games Played
The first Photo Play 'Schnapsen' Championship was held in Austria recently, with the finals held at Funworld's headquarters in Schörfling at the end of November and Martin Maier named the 2003 champion.
According to Herbert Ehmer, Funworld Austria's manager, "The entire promotion ran terrifically and absolutely proved that Austria's operators can really get things moving at the individual locations with active operating location marketing."
'Schnapsen' is a typically Austrian card game where special playing cards are used. Over 120,000 games of the popular card game were played during the six-week qualifying period - increasing the total number of games played by 38.3%
The best 220 players were chosen from the qualifying period to enter the finals, and then the best 64 tournament was held. The 64's tournament was held in a double K.O. system that guaranteed suspense right up to the end.
During the course of the game three high score chases were held. Thanks to his enormous stamina and concentration, Martin Maier from Judenburg, Steiermark, became the first Austrian 'Schnapsen' Champion after a three hour grand final.
The Photo Play Championship in Diamond Elevens was launched immediately on December 1 due to the success of the 'Schnapsen' Championship, with qualifications ending on February 8, 2004 and the finals scheduled for February 28. During the finals, players will have the opportunity to enter additional competitions to qualify for places in the Austrian national team that will participate in the 2004 Photo Play World Games in Alpbach, Tyrol.
