Namco Latest to Install Sega's Derby Owners Club
Namco Operations have become the latest operator to invest in Sega's role playing video game Derby Owners Club, where players adopt the roles of breeder, trainer, jockey, and owner of a thoroughbred racehorse. The eight player unit has been successfully installed at the Luton based bowl and FEC site.
Being an instant hit with regulars and attracting passers by, it has added a new dimension to the site's atmosphere. Site manager, Brian Moore, is already planning on holding race nights and competitions to add to customer satisfaction.
Following on from the successes experienced by Bowlplex and Megabowl it is only natural that other main player operators would follow suit. Not every site is fortunate enough to have the space for the eight player, but following the launch of a four-player version at the Preview many more operators have come forward with interest for 2004, and new installations are planned.
"The undeniable success of this product is that it adds new income to the bottom line, rather than just taking from other aspects of the business," said Sega's Justin Burke.
"It is not a traditional video game - it succeeds on the fact that players get attached to their own horse, stored on a magnetic memory card, and want to come back - this adds to cash box levels. The Derby Owner's Club gives a new reason for them to return to the venue," Mr Burke said.
Brain Moore said, "This is as close as you can get to the thrill of racing without actually being at the track. It is a unique game which delivers a unique experience."
