Elo Introduces Outdoor Touch Technology
Elo TouchSystems, Inc., the global leader in touch technology and a business unit of Tyco Electronics, has announced its solution to providing all weather touch technology on a truly flat surface with the new Entuitive 1547L 15in liquid crystal display (LCD) touchmonitor.

The 1547L 15in touchmonitor uses the latest projected capacitive touchscreen technology with a choice of Elo's own DirectTouch or ThruTouch options. Elo's 1547L with projected capacitive touch technology is ideally suited for outdoor and throughglass public access applications such as ATMs, web phones, ticket machines, payatthepump petrol dispensers, virtual shop windows, outdoor kiosks and gaming and amusement bartop games. Elo's projected capacitive touch technology is resistant to vandalism and scratches and unaffected by rain, snow, ice or dust. And like all Elo's family of touchmonitors, the new 1547L with projected capacitive touch technology offers stable, driftfree operation that can be activated by finger or gloved hand.

"Elo's new projected capacitive touchscreens are based on technology that enables the touch to be sensed through a protective screen in front of the display," said Michael Bartelmess, Elo's European Director of Product Management.

The 1547L with the DirectTouch option includes a 7.8mm tempered glass surface with a watertight minibezel, while the ThruTouch option, designed for use behind a customer supplied glass or other protective surface, does not include a minibezel.

"The sensor layer can be up to 25mm from the touch surface so that the 1547L touchmonitors can be installed behind protective materials - without metallic coatings or behind a store window." According to Mr Bartelmess, the embedded sensor and solidstate controller provide increased levels of reliability and life expectancy.

Because the ThruTouch option does not require a bezel, it can be designed into a system with a true flat front surface. This is an important feature for tabletop and bartop applications, ticketing machines and other outdoor systems.

"The arrival of our new 1547L 15in LCD rearmount touchmonitor with projected capacitive touch technology means that the touchmonitor no longer has to be recessed; this eliminates the channels that could collect dirt and liquids," said Mike Sigona, Elo's European marketing manager.

"It also means that it is no longer necessary for OEMs or systems integrators to accommodate a bezel around the touchscreen." According to Mr Sigona, the new projected capacitive touch technology is completely unaffected by spills and dirt. "The projected capacitive technology allows a waiter to clean the tabletop surface as easily as an ordinary tabletop. What's more, touch can be activated by finger or gloved hand and the performance is precise and driftfree, as you would expect from an Elo touchmonitor," Mr Sigona said.

Elo's range of touch technology is the largest offered by any manufacturer. In addition to Elo's projected capacitive technology, Elo offers other touch technologies including AccuTouch fivewire and AT4 fourwire resistive; IntelliTouch/SecureTouch/iTouch surface wave; and CarrollTouch infrared.
