Latest Trend - Games Based on Television Shows
The latest trend to emerge in the coin-op amusement industry is products that are based on television shows. Already this year Namco Japan has revealed its pre-debut version of its new arcade game The Idol Master, and Sega/Hitmaker has released an arcade game based on a TV Quiz Show.
Namco's The Idol Master is based on the Idol television smash hit where unknown, aspiring pop stars audition for the chance to compete against other contestants in their country for votes. The most popular contestant - determined by the country's votes, wins the title of idol, and a large recording contract. Players of The Idol Master game assume the role of producer for one hopeful character, who may audition to compete in the idol competition. The producer must develop the characters vocal ability, dance repertoire and image in order to help the character in their audition and throughout the competition to inevitably win the title of idol.
The Quiz Show by Sega/Hitmaker is a bingo style quiz game, for the Naomi platform where up to four people can play simultaneously. The game features the stereotypical afternoon television quiz show format, where there is a male host, an attractive female assistant, an audience and some contestants. There are a number of different genres of questions, which are selected randomly with the spin of the roulette. Once a genre is determined, a question of that nature appears in the monitor. All of the players have the opportunity to answer every question. Players earn bingo points when they answer correctly, and where relevant, the quickest player to answer correctly can earn the right to spin the roulette. When a player has earned enough bingo points, an option appears for them to compete in ‘the reach,' which is a special challenge question. If this answer is correct, the player wins the bingo.
