Switchover of Shreveport Casino Due This Week
Harrah's riverboat casino will switch over quickly to Sam's Town following approval of the gambling hall's sale to Boyd Gaming Corp. The $190 million deal was approved Monday by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. Officials of both companies said the sale would be closed Wednesday, five hours after the casino closes to begin a transfer operation that will take up to 30 hours. State police will oversee the switch before giving permission to Boyd to open. "We hope to be reopened by noon on Thursday," said Keith Smith, Boyd's chief executive officer. William Boyd, who co-founded Boyd Gaming with his father, Sam, said Harrah's General Manager Thomas Roberts and almost all of Harrah's employees would remain at the Shreveport casino, which will be operated under the Sam's Town brand. As a result of the sale, Harrah's plans to close its $1.45 billon deal to buy Horseshoe Entertainment, which includes Horseshoe's riverboat in Bossier City, on July 1, said Anthony Sanfilippo, chairman of Harrah's central division. Harrah's also owns Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, which includes a slot-machine casino. Boyd also owns the Treasure Chest riverboat casino in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner.
