In the Philippines, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Trenas has warned internet cafes and gaming stations against allowing minors, particularly students, to enter their establishments during school hours. "This is in accordance with an existing ordinance regulating all internet cafes. We have reports that a number of internet stations are allowing minors (to play even during school hours)," Mr Trenas said. He said the Iloilo City Internet Cafe and Providers Association (ICCPA) supports his directive. The City Government, the mayor added, will also strictly impose the ban on the establishment of similar businesses within 200-meter radius from schools. Section 3 of Ordinance 2001-185 states that no business permit or license to operate gaming centers shall be issued to those situated within 200-meter radius from the nearest entrance of elementary and secondary schools. Earlier, President Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the police and school authorities to shut down all gambling operations within and around schools nationwide. The directive was made following reports that some students, including those in high school, are getting hooked on gambling activities.
