Product Recall on Toy Jewelry Sold in U.S. Vending Machines
Today, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), four toy jewelry importers announced the voluntary recall of 150 million pieces of toy jewelry sold in vending machines over a two and a half year period. Recently the four toy jewelry importers involved in this recall received notice from the CPSC that its tests found that lead in some of these products could be accessible to children under certain circumstances. The importers joined together as a group, spoke with some of their testing laboratories, and asked to meet with the CPSC. Once the suppliers understood the issue CPSC had with the 10 products it tested, the suppliers asked that the recall be expanded to include any potentially problematic product and to eliminate any potential confusion for consumers. That is why only about one-half of the toy jewelry being recalled may have contained lead, but because it is difficult to distinguish jewelry that may contain lead from jewelry that does not, the four importers decided to recall all of it. The four importers are forming a Safe Jewelry Council, which will bring a national focus within the industry on the continued safe importation, distribution and sale of toy jewelry. The importers are committed to working closely with CPSC staff on eliminating any lead hazard in any future importation of toy jewelry.
