Minister to Review Monetary Values in Irish Gaming & Lotteries Act
Ireland's Minister for Justice has indicated his intentions to introduce regulation that will provide a basis to update stake and prize money limits in the Gaming & Lotteries Act. The changes will require primary legislation (an Act of The Oireachtas / Parliament) and the Minister proposes to make the necessary changes to the next suitable Bill that arises, but said it is not possible at this stage to say exactly when that will be. Limits in other EU countries will be one of many considerations to be taken into account when deciding on the new regulation.
It is understood that this action is separate from the long term, in-depth review of the Act promised by the Minister on a number of occasions. This is good news for the gaming sector and may indicate the Minister's willingness to eventually introduce real change in an area neglected for so long. 2006 is the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Gaming & Lotteries Act. It is surprising that the industry is governed in the 21st century by a piece of legislation introduced in such different circumstances in 1956.
