Big Buck World Championships 2012 in New York City
Players and fans from across the U.S and from overseas headed to New York City for the 5th Annual Big Buck World Championships 2012 on November 9 and 10. The competition was held in the historical Altman Building in Lower Manhattan.
The Altman was transformed into a rustic style hunting lodge, and featured six Big Buck Hunter coin-operated machines for the competition. Several large screen monitors were provided, displaying players bracket rankings and real-time social media messages. The creators of the game, Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix, also provided coin-op machines for spectators to play including the new Snow Cross and Super Bikes games.
Sixty-four competitors made it to the championship rounds after rigorous qualifying matches held earlier in the year, and with more than $50, 000 in prize money to be won, competition was fierce.
Reigning champion, Nick Robbins, made it to the final round but lost out to underdog Chris Fream of Minneapolis. Fream took home the Pappy's Jug, the Big Buck Trophy and $15, 000 in prize money. While the returning women's champion, Sara Erlandson of Beldenville, WI, held onto her crown for another year at the second annual women's tournament, and came fourth in the overall World Championships. She took home the Jugs of Destiny trophy, and a total of $7, 000 prize money.
However, the weekend wasn't all about winning. In light of recent events and a need for relief following Hurricane Sandy, Raw Thrills has collected and matched donations up to $50, 000 for the American Red Cross relief efforts in the New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut areas.
