The Winnitron 1000 is a free-to-play independent video arcade game cabinet which features new games created by indie game developers. The idea originated in Winnipeg, Canada, and has gained traction globally.
The idea for the Winnitron 1000 came out of the first Winnipeg Game Jam, and it's creation was a joint effort of six main individuals (with some help from others along the way): Alec Holowka, Marlon Wiebe, Noel Berry, Kert Gartner, Tom Rab, and Joel Forest - otherwise known as the Bit Collective.
The Bit Collective, according to their site (which is yet to be finished and relaunched), "is a group of independent video game developers based in Winnipeg, Canada. Our goal is to strengthen and promote the local indie games scene by creating epic video game trailers, hosting game jam events and building indie arcade machines."
The message is one that has been appreciated across the globe, as can be seen by the many Winnitron cabinets popping up all over the world. The idea is to find an 80s arcade machine cabinet, refurbish it, and install it with a new screen, and all new programming in order to play new games created by independent developers. Since the cabinet has been turning up in countries everywhere, a network is now in place to share the games created for new Winnitron machines, so they can be enjoyed by everyone who plays them.
There is currently a Winnitron 1000 in Winnipeg, Canada; Ultrecht, Netherlands; Christchurch, New Zealand; New York City, USA; Melbourne, Australia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Shanghai, China; and Bologna, Italy.
