With many companies jumping on the Virtual Reality bandwagon, investing in developmental technology, the VR market is quickly becoming an arms race to see who can release a viable consumer product first. This race is heating up as Sony aspires to deliver their own Project Morpehus VR Headset by June 2016.
IGN reports that the Japanese newspaper Asahi has confirmed that the company is hoping to release the device by then, although it has not been made clear at this stage if this would only be in the Japanese and Asian markets or worldwide.
Sony is due to give a press conference on Monday, June 15, which is the day before E3 2015 Show opens, making the timeing of this announcement very interesting for gaming and amusement industry. Hopefully we will get more information on the headset and where it is set ot be released next year during this conference.
It's possible, as earlier this year Worldwide Studios boss, Shuhei Yoshida, admitted several companies are working on games for the VR headset, with the first expected to be revealed at E3.
Speaking of Project Morpheus games, the company has opened a new studio to focus exclusively on developing original games for the upcoming device in a North West Studio in England.
In a statement to Eurogamer, a spokesperson said, "We are still in the early planning phase with this studio, and are currently focused on hiring the right team," they said. "We look forward to sharing more news and formal announcements in the near future."
With the ever-increasing development, funds, and research going into the development of VR technologies by companies like Sony, Samsung, VOID centers, Oculus Rift (Facebook), and indie developers, we are bound to get some consumer ready products soon.
