Teaching Science... with Pinball!

Science and Pinball. What a match!
Science and Pinball. What a match!
The Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California has a new exhibit, "The Art and Science of Pinball" the exhibit is being run in conjunction with the Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda, California and will run from the 1st of July until the 24th of September.

The exhibit's aim is to teach people about science, technology, history and art through 200 years of pinball. One machine in particular perfectly shows this, called "The North Star" released in 1964. It features on the backglass an Eskimo Woman in a fur coat/skirt with a submarine in the background, which depicts the Nautilus sub coming up under the North Pole, (an actual event in 1958). Along with history the exhibition features workshops featuring science, math and engineering.

Also another machine featured is the "Pinbowl" Game which is shown to be a great example of Chaos Theory (Small Changes in the enviorment, can make huge changes on an object). The Exhibit also features a show on the engineering it takes to make a pinball machine.

Also featured is large canvas recreations of backglass art by several local artists and they are also hosting a pinball tournament.

Truly an unexpected but refreshing way to learn.
