Stern Pinballs Converted for the Disabled
Stern pinball machines have been converted for disabled people to play. U Can Do, Inc. recently exhibited two converted Stern Pinball SHARKEY'S SHOOTOUT's at the Abilities Expo at the New Jersey Convention Center.
The pinball machine works as follows: "The familiar flipper controls are overridden with large circular switches-something like those domed lights that go on and off with a slap. Players can use one hand or two. For people who don't have the use of their hands, the switches can be tapped with the feet. For those who don't have use of anything below the neck, they can be tapped with a twitch of the head."
The Abilities Expo proved the pinball machines a success, with people smiling their way through simple games of pinball that they thought they would never be able to play. "Stern Pinball is proud to have worked with Mr. Kochel, Mr. Gulich, and U Can Do, Inc. to make this all a reality." says Gary Stern.
