SEGA management in the USA has decided to take the unprecedented action of changing its self-assigned "Yellow Sticker" video game rating for its new ‘Virtua Cop 3' to a "Red Sticker" rating. To our knowledge, this is the first such alteration made by a video game manufacturer under the U.S. trade's voluntary video game rating system. Sega's decision reflects credit upon itself and helps ensure the continued integrity of the Coin-Operated Video Game Parental Advisory System. At the same time, with AAMA reporting a "tidal wave" of potential video game bans in various state governments around the USA, the entire ‘VC3' episode is a timely reminder: This industry remains highly vulnerable to outside censorship, especially if it fails to self-police properly.
