Today sees the release of the $36m "Dungeons and Dragons" in USA cinemas as Hollywood begins to cash in on the popularity of video games.

Dungeons and Dragons sees Jeremy Irons, Thora Birch, Marlon Wayans and Justin Whalin in the tale of a rag-tag group of adventurers seeking to foil the plans of an evil wizard.

With the increasing popularity of video games, movie makers are looking closely of joining similarly based concepts where they take the popularity of video game characters and transfer them onto the big screen.

In 1995 Mortal Kombat grossed $70.5m and this year, X Men grossed $157m ($54m in its opening weekend in the US) - with returns as large as these, Hollywood will be looking for a few more video game characters to release on the big screen soon.
