Malaysian Government To Close All Malaysian Arcade Centres

Malaysian Deputy Premier and Home Interior Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has announced that all arcade centres in Malaysia must be closed down within two months, according to a report published on the Baca Jaring website. The decision comes after the media reported police destroying video gambling machines seized from unlicensed premises, yet according to the announcement made by Abdullah the ban extends to licensed arcade premises as well.While this decision has been applauded by many in government and social groups, including the opposition Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, arcade operators and The Penang Amusement Machine Dealers and Operators Association are considering appealing against the blanket decision on the grounds of being unfair to law-abiding operators.
Stanley Kok, public relations manager for Sungei Wang Plaza shopping mall said in response to the announcement, "It's a shame. The government should not impose a blanket ban as many family entertainment outlets will also be affected.
"We don't encourage gambling but these (family) centres have car racing and other fun and healthy games."
Gambling is forbidden to Malaysian Muslims, making up over half the population and restricts the availability of gambling to others. Abdullah said, "Actually, it has turned addicts out of the young ... they need to go there every day or else they cannot sleep. Video games have turned into some kind of gambling activity and will not bring much good."
