Move over Kylie! Sega's Out Run 2 SP is the New Rear of the Year!

Kylie may have one of the most famous rears of modern times but Sega Amusements Europe certainly added a challenger to the of 'rear of the year' contest with its world premiere of Out Run 2 SP at the London Preview 2005. Following on from the 'new classic' Out Run 2 launched last year Sega premiered a prototype deluxe version of the new 'Out Run 2 Special Tours'. The 50" deluxe cabinet in Ferrari yellow has been modelled on a Ferrari 360 with a replica 'rear end' being the signature of the new cabinet. The stunning looking piece, seen for the first time by anybody on the first day of the Preview, is the first real deluxe driver to appear on the market for many years. Many operators and customers welcomed the move saying that they had not had the chance to buy and site a centrepiece such as this for many years. Indeed that fact that Out Run 2 Special Tours can be linked into a four-player enforced this idea and many were talking of buying it in such a format. Alan Rawlinson of Family Leisure who operates London's Flagship Funland in the Trocadero said, "It looks the ideal piece to make into a big four player, the like of which we have not seen for some time." The new software, as would be expected with any update features new courses, 15 in total all based in the USA with many familiar landmarks, and new cars, in this case the Ferrari 512BB and the 250GTO.The game gives a player additional choices of normal or tuned handling options. 'Normal' option offers flexible and light handling for the casual user while the advanced player can opt for the 'Tuned' option for speed. There are also some novel features such as the player choice in linked mode to have the software to mix the courses at random from Out Run2 and Out Run2 Special; and also the operator selectable option to allow players to race all 15 new USA course in one stretch without forks. Appealing to the older fans of the 1986 version the original soundtrack has been reintroduced and Justin Burke of Sega said, "so many people of my generation who remember 'that' sound stopped as they heard it for the first time again – it obviously took them back down memory lane. It has turned out to be very popular feature." The three modes found in Out Run2 have all been maintained and enhanced: Out Run mode, Heart Attack mode and Time Attack Mode. The game has its own dedicated Internet ranking web site allowing players to enter their result in any of the modes, handling options and transmission types. The game that is set to be a hit judging by reaction at the London Preview is due for release in December. "Sales for the game could not be taken prior to the show as would normally happen as it was a very tight lipped affair with the machine debuting onto the world stage at the Preview, however, the initial production run was allocated by mid afternoon on the second day of the show," Paul Williams said.
