New Namco Driver Tunes in to Street Racing Culture

Maximum Tune, the new twin driving video game available from Namco Europe, offers a unique spin on street racing where players emulate the popular pursuit of customising and fine-tuning their vehicles. Vended directly from the machine for the cost of one credit, ‘Maximum Tuning' memory cards store a range of data covering up to 50 games, adding updates on individuals' achievements, car modifications and upgrades with each play. Players select from a range of 16 high performance street car models which, depending on progress through the game, can be tuned up to enhance their appearance, performance and capabilities. Up to 28 tune-ups are possible ranging from new wheels, shock absorbers, exhaust boxes and pipes through to adding stabilisers, turbo boosts, new breathers and full body kits. Namco Maximum Tune offers two modes of play: "Time Attack Mode" is a one-car race against the clock offering a choice of five courses across two time zones; "Street Mode" tests players' ability to compete at three skill levels against five different rivals.Each level features five courses with completion of the first four allowing access to the fifth. Overall there's a total of 20 unique rivals to defeat, each with their own custom-built machine and driving style. Up to four twin units of Maximum Tune can be linked for head-to-head competition with a special "Intruder Mode" enabling players to enter into a two-player game at any time. The game's street car racing realism is more than matched by its cash box performance said Namco Europe Sales & Commercial Director, John McKenzie, "We have been testing it in Europe since January and the figures have been outstanding. One site we tested on, Maximum Tune more than doubled the income of a contemporary rival that was also recently installed. As a distributor you can only hope that you're going to get a machine as good as this."
