Tecmo To Pay Damages

Tecmo has been ordered to pay 2,340,000 yen in damages to racehorse owners for the unauthorised use of their names in Tecmo's horse racing game, Gallop Racer.

The long running court action (since 1999) which has seen the horse racing owners being initially awarded 3.4 million yen (race owners seeking 19 million yen) was appealed by Tecmo under the grounds that the names of the horses that participated in the GI Race had publicity rights.

In the recent verict, Tecmo's payout in damages were lowered as the judge ruled that only GI race winners own these rights.
