U.S. Congress Work Against Sex and Violence in Media

The American Amusement Machine Association (AAMA) has revealed in the latest Loose Change newsletter, that two Members of the U.S. Congress - Representatives Joe Baca (D-CA) and Tom Osborne (R-NE) - have formed a "Congressional Sex and Violence in the Media Caucus" and are actively soliciting Members of Congress to join the Caucus.According to AAMA, the stated purposes of the Caucus, as outlined in a "Dear Colleague" letter that Representatives Baca and Osborne are circulating, are:
1. to create a voice within Congress on the issue of sexual and violent content in the media, particularly in the video game, movie and television industries;
2. to identify ways to work effectively in our districts to prevent violence by and against children through education, outreach and advocacy. By developing cooperative efforts that involve police departments, educators, and community groups, we can heighten awareness of this issue;
3. to reduce the marketing of violent toys, games and entertainment to children by: (a) working with parents and other concerned adults to reduce the demand for violent "entertainment" products and (b) working with industry to reduce the supply of such products; and
4. to help disseminate the prevailing scientific consensus on the effects on children of exposure to violent and sexual content in the media.
The AAMA have said they will continue to monitor this and video content-related developments in Congress.
